Literacy

Winterfold teaching staff have collectively developed a whole school approach to literacy ensuring continuity in methodology and a consistent approach from class to class and year to year. Our literacy specialist teacher works collaboratively with all staff to implement high quality teaching programs targeted at both individual and group learning needs.

Working in conjunction with the Fremantle Language Development Centre, the oral ‘Cracking the Code’ program is implemented in the kindergarten to ensure students gain the essential phonological awareness skills required for future literacy success.

Daily Literacy Blocks are implemented from Pre-primary to Year 6. The blocks incorporate all strands of literacy including speaking and listening, spelling, reading and writing.  First Steps strategies are used to implement the Australian Curriculum.

Literacy is specifically integrated across all learning areas assisted by the use of technology including computers, iPads and interactive whiteboards.

We are committed to forming ongoing relationships with parents, carers and local community through a variety of programs including parent information sessions outlining to parents how they can assist in leading their child to literacy success.
