SOAR – Safety Optimism Achievement and Respect

PBS and SOAR at Winterfold Primary School

At Winterfold Primary School, we use Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) to create a safe, supportive and positive learning environment where every child can thrive. PBS focuses on explicitly teaching expected behaviours, reinforcing positive choices, and supporting students to learn and grow.

Our school‑wide expectations are known as SOAR, which stands for:
Safety, Optimism, Achievement and Respect.
These values guide how students behave, interact with others and engage in learning across all areas of school life.

Every fortnight, students learn a specific SOAR behaviour through short, age‑appropriate lessons delivered in their classrooms. These lessons clearly explain the behaviour, why it matters, and give students opportunities to see it modelled and practise it in real‑life school situations.

Positive behaviour is encouraged every day. Staff actively notice and acknowledge students who demonstrate SOAR expectations through specific praise and encouragement. Students may also receive SOAR tokens, which recognise positive choices and help motivate students to continue demonstrating safe, respectful and responsible behaviour.

SOAR tokens contribute to faction points, assembly draws, class rewards and whole‑school celebrations. This approach helps build a strong sense of belonging, pride and positivity across our school.

At Winterfold, we believe that when positive behaviour is taught, practised and celebrated, students feel confident, supported and ready to achieve their best.
